I’d be remiss to not acknowledge Steve’s comment on our previous post in which the NY Times’ Lawrence Ulrich was taken to task by yours truly for his tree-hugging tendencies and very pop-oriented writing style. Steve correctly pointed out that Ulrich’s credentials are considerable (see here), and as such it is our obligation to issue a partial retraction. We remain opposed to the spirit of Ulrich’s piece in question, but in this case we uncharacteristically failed to complete our usually thorough research process to ensure that what you read here is 100% based upon facts. We resolve to let no more slipshod work make it to these pages. Thanks for calling us out Steve, and thanks for watching.

We know this guy in Kentucky that can embarass the rich chumps in new Z06s at the drags. That’s because he has a titanic ‘71 Caprice coupe that runs mid-11s in the quarter on pure small block. Listen listen, playas. Daytona Blue is all about cars galore. We dig the history of auto racing and customization. We dig the new stuff too. But these Donks, well, they seem to have reached a completely new plateau of awesomeness. Ridin’ Dirty indeed. One begins to think perhaps not. NASCAR announced today that it is only guaranteeing two spots for Toyota in the season-opener at Daytona. The remaining Toyota entries will have to qualify just like everyone else. And this has some worried.  At Preseason Thunder in Daytona this week, NASCAR.com reports that the Toyotas were posting remarkably lackluster times, proof that the Toyota teams are still far from perfecting the setups on these spanking new machines. Though Daytona is still a month away, one gets the sense that the Toyota teams are concerned about becoming competitive in time. Lee White, senior vice president and general manager of Toyota Racing Development told NASCAR.com that “I’d be lying if I told you it wasn’t daunting. I’d be lying if I told you I was confident that those eight cars will even run the race, because only two of them are guaranteed in.” We at Daytona Blue are eager to see TRD fall flat on their face. The primacy of American engineering shall reign supreme!

And a word about the car. It looks like a 1998-vintage Monte Carlo save for the C-pillar!

Benny Parsons who charmed television audiences with his folksy demeanor as much as he impressed fans with his ability as a driver, died Tuesday at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte following complications from lung cancer. He was 65.

Parsons was inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in 1994 and named one of NASCAR’s 50 greatest drivers in 1998.
